It appears that this family was in better than
average condition and prominence. They were
well-known in Bethany and also in Jerusalem
(John 11:45-46).
Since it was the Feast of Tabernacles (John 7:
2,14), the feast of harvest, there was great
excitement among the people.
This feast was the most joyous of all the feasts
and the people prepared booths to remember
the departure of the children of Israel from
Egypt.
" You shall hold a festival for the LORD your
God seven days, in the place that the LORD
will choose; for the
LORD your God will
bless all your crops
and all your
undertakings,
and you shall have
nothing but joy."
Deuteronomy 16:15
